Give Them a Vision
Volunteers should be honored by giving them a vision. This vision is what makes giving their spare time worthwhile. It helps them to understand that the work they do means something. It helps motivate them and focus their energy. A volunteer without vision is simply spending their time just doing busy work.
Which of these is more inspiring to a volunteer: “Bob, would you stand in front of the church for 45 minutes every-other Sunday holding the door open?” or “Bob, we want everyone coming through this church door to see how friendly our church is - would you give 45 minutes every-other Sunday to make this happen?”
Honor your volunteers with a vision. Help them see that their time is being put to good use.
